ABC expands Newcastle news service - ABC Online

Updated April 25, 2013 11:09:47

The ABC has revealed plans to boost its regional television news services, with a video journalist to be based permanently in Newcastle.

The Corporation was granted an extra $10 million earlier this year and has announced it is spending the money on 64 new staff, and will also open three new offices in Parramatta, Geelong and Ispwich.

Station manager at 1233 ABC Newcastle Phil Ashley-Brown says at a time when other media organisations are cutting news services, it is a welcome boost for local reporting.

"It means that stories from here will go national," he said.

"It'll give the region a profile that it's not had from the ABC in a long, long time.

It also means that our news services here are increasing when news services in other organisations in the Hunter are decreasing."

"This is the first time we've had TV in Newcastle in a very long time.

"It means we'll be able to service Newcastle, the Hunter region, the Central Coast and Port Macquarie with a TV journalist."

"It's not a news crew, but it's one person going out, telling visual stories that can go onto online, into TV bulletins around the country, and not only around Australia, but also potentially to our international audiences as well."
