FABRICIO COLOCCINI could make his Newcastle return before the end of the season.
Toon’s skipper has missed the last 11 games after breaking two bones in his back in February’s win over Southampton.
Alan Pardew’s side have struggled without Coloccini and, while six points clear of the drop zone, are still not safe from relegation.
But the Argentine defender has returned to training and could still feature in one of Newcastle’s four remaining Premier League games.
Pardew said: “Colo is training. He hasn’t done full physical training — that’s due to come, hopefully, this week.
“We are fingers crossed because obviously, that would be a big boost for us to have our captain back, for sure.”
Pardew has come under criticism from some disgruntled supporters after last week’s humiliating derby defeat to Sunderland compounded what has been a disappointing campaign.
The Magpies boss says he is willing to meet fans to discuss their concerns — but only when the season is out next month.
Pards added: “I think emotions are running high and probably will be until the next home game.
“We are just looking to get rid of frustration. I said that to the players.”
