Emmerson Boyce

Emmerson Boyce doesn't score goals very often. Three goals in a lengthy Barclays Premier League career is testimony to that.

But when the Wigan Athletic defender does find the back of the net it's usually something really special.

Sprinkled in his resume before last weekend is an overhead kick and long-range piledriver, now he can add an audacious back-heel.

His improvised piece of magic may eventually have been in vain as Wigan succumbed 2-1 to Swansea City but it has to be one of the early contenders for the EPL goal of the season.

While the effort was a stand-out choice this week, there was plenty of competition for second best.

West Ham United's Modigo Maiga eventually go the nod but Chelsea duo Gary Cahill and Juan Mata as well as Southampton's Adam Lallana come into discussions.

With Juan Mata pulling the attacking strings, it's no surprise Chelsea are charging along at the head of the EPL table.

The star midfielder has been in dynamic form in recent weeks and his skill and precise finishing proved too much for Tottenham Hotspur.

Not only has the Spaniard earned goal of the week recognition but he also the dominated player of the week discussions for his two-goal performance.

Mata is part of an exciting Chelsea attacking midfield triumvirate featuring Oscar and Eden Hazard that is one of the major reasons behind the club's unbeaten start to the EPL season.

It's been a tough initiation for new Norwich City manager Chris Hughton.

The Canaries have been anchored in the relegation zone, without a win, for much of the opening two months of the season.

But the win over Arsenal at Carrow Road over the weekend has breathed fresh life into the campaign and brought a sense of palpable relief to East Anglia.

For Arsenal, well, it's just another case of a missed opportunity, one they way seriously regret at the end of the season.

This Tyne-Wear derby from 2006 had everything - tension, relief, star players and some fantastic goals.

Newcastle, under Graeme Souness, hosted Mick McCarthy's Sunderland in front of a baying St James' park crowd.

The home side's unsung hero in this game is actually still on the books of the club now - although he rarely plays. He has scored 50 goals in 268 appearances. Do you know who he is?

Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs are threatening to break away from the chasing pack even at this early stage of the season.

The three big guns all came through potentially tricky clashes over the weekend as Juan Mata, Edin Dzeko and Wayne Rooney all scored doubles.

At the other end of the table, times are tough for the likes of Southampton, Reading, Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa.
