The increasingly desperate financial crisis facing Iranian students in Australia has put a spotlight on the lack of meaningful assistance being offered by government and universities, and putting the sector's reputation at risk.
Heather Richards, president of the Newcastle University Student Association, was able in June to secure a letter from then Newcastle's Mayor John Tate in which he calls on local employers to help by offering Iranian students jobs. It is the sort of thing universities and government should be doing and not small student associations.
