Socceroos star Harry Kewell held a meeting with Melbourne Heart on Melbourne Cup day to discuss a potential return to the A-League.

Kewell and Heart coach John Aloisi both attended the Cup, but the pair met in the morning.

Heart's board is understood to have given the football department and Aloisi the all-clear to sign the 34-year-old, albeit for far less than the $1 million a year he would have got at Victory this season.

No deal has been done and it's understood Heart are leaning towards not offering the former Socceroo a contract.

Aside from a smaller war chest than most clubs, Heart's concerns are believed to centre on the length of time it would take Kewell to get match fit and they have already signed midfield ace Vince Grella.

Heart chief executive Scott Munn confirmed the meeting but said it was "unlikely" the former Victory striker would switch Melbourne clubs.

"John and Harry did meet, they are former Socceroos teammates," Munn said.

"They discussed a wide range of issues, among those were Harry's future.

"(But) it's unlikely Harry Kewell will be playing for Melbourne Heart."

While Kewell attended a charity golf event in Perth, Glory chief executive Paul Kelly confirmed that no formal meeting took place.

Sydney FC haven't spoken with Kewell, while no contact has happened with Western Sydney Wanderers - the only other club with the roster and salary-cap room to offer him a full contract.

Kewell and Heart first had contact a month ago, but it's believed there has been no direct contact with any other A-League clubs.

Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata said the club will wait until January before their 23rd and final player is signed.

"There has been no discussion with Harry, we've got 22 players and we'll probably wait until the transfer window opens in January to sign a 23rd," Pignata said.
