THE trickle of clubs starting their pre-season becomes a flood this week.

Penrith became the first club back in training last Thursday, holding a field session to kick off a tough training block before Christmas. Seven other clubs will join them from today, starting the task of getting ready for season 2013.

The Roosters, Wests Tigers, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Souths, St George Illawarra and New Zealand Warriors all return to the training field this week.

And all will be rolling out their new recruits, like Penrith, who welcomed eight new faces last week: Lewis Brown (Warriors), Dean Whare (Manly), Sika Manu (Storm), Wes Naiqama (Newcastle), Kyle O'Donnell (Newcastle), James Segeyaro (North Queensland), James Roberts (Souths) and Tom Humble (Wests Tigers).

Humble joined the club yesterday on a two-year deal. The only new buy missing on Thursday was ex-Dragon Jeremy Latimore, who was still on his honeymoon.

"We had a good break but it's always exciting on the first day back," Panthers prop Tim Grant said.

"When you look around, we have an impressive roster so things are looking good.

"It was the first day back but we know we have to work hard up until Christmas.

"After last year, motivation won't be a problem. We know we have to work hard but we are ready to go."

The biggest name missing was Penrith junior and former club champion Luke Lewis, now a Cronulla Shark. Regulars Travis Burns and Michael Gordon have moved on.

Mick Potter has had little time to slip comfortably into his new role as head coach of Wests Tigers.

Cronulla return to training tomorrow, Canberra this Thursday, Canterbury, Parramatta and Manly next week.

Premiers Melbourne will be the last team to return, back on November 26.
