Sydney FC go to W-League joint lead - Ninemsn

Sydney FC gained a measure of revenge on Brisbane Roar with a deserved 3-1 win against the team which ended their W-League title aspirations last season in controversial circumstances.

With a three-goal burst early in the second half, the Sky Blues overturned a halftime deficit to move equal top alongside reigning champions Canberra United, who won by the same scoreline against Adelaide United.

Sydney seemed set for a grand final berth earlier this year, only for Brisbane to equalise in the dying seconds after a disputed injury delay, with Sky Blues' coach Alen Stajcic and star striker Kyah Simon dismissed as the Roar won through to the decider.

Unlike that tempestuous contest, there was just one caution issued in this game in a low-key match-up between the W-League's two keenest rivals.

Lana Harch gave Brisbane the lead against the run of play just before the break.

However, Sydney returned for the second period with renewed vigour and quickly turned the deficit into a two-goal advantage within a 15-minute period.

New Zealand international Emma Kete and Matildas' duo Sam Kerr and Ellyse Perry, returning after a week's absence due to cricket commitments, all found the back of the net for the Sky Blues.

A similar scenario played out in the nation's capital as Canberra also scored a 3-1 comeback win against Adelaide to sit alongside Sydney at the top of the standings, though with a narrow lead on goal difference.

Last season's strugglers Adelaide took a shock lead against in-form Canberra, on a 16-match unbeaten run, with Racheal Quigley surprising goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold with a long-range effort that went in off the post.

After surviving immense pressure, Adelaide were starting to dream of a famous victory, only for the home side to hit three unanswered goals in the final 18 minutes through Caitlin Cooper, skipper Ellie Brush and substitute Sam Wood.

Perth Glory were knocked off top spot as Western Sydney Wanderers created a slice of history with a 2-0 win over the leaders.

Midfielder Trudy Camilleri was the star with goals in either half as the competition's newest club claimed their first win to move off the bottom of the ladder.

Melbourne Victory also secured their maiden win of the season edging a 1-0 win in Geelong against Newcastle Jets, thanks to Rebekah Stott's strike with the last kick of the first half.
