THE Wanderers may be ahead of Sydney FC on the A-League ladder but they are not getting carried away just yet.
Few would have thought it possible for the Wanderers to be leading their cross-town rivals even at this early stage of the competition, but after two commendable wins in succession their doubters will be having second thoughts.
With another 22 rounds to go before the finals, many twists, turns and permutations are to follow and the Wanderers realise they are far from assured of a successful season just yet.
"It is still very early on,'' said Wanderers striker Mark Bridge.
"I don't think any teams will be looking too deeply into anything positional-wise on the ladder just yet.
"Come December and Christmas, that is when places on the table will be looked at more closely.''
Western Sydney host Newcastle on Saturday and will be hoping the Jets' arduous road trip to Perth on the weekend will fatigue them for the coming clash at Parramatta Stadium.
But Newcastle coach Gary van Egmond said despite his side's 3-2 loss to Perth on Saturday they will still take plenty of confidence into the match against the Wanderers.
"I think it was pretty close to one of our best performances,'' van Egmond said.
"The first half against Sydney was good, but [against Perth] more so with the hold of the game with the type of opposition away from home, it is about how we play.
"I haven't felt as confident after a game - even though we lost - about looking forward to the next week and the weeks after, following that game.
"So I'm quite happy.''
