I didn’t join Twitter to meet people, I was just trying out new ‘technology’ and it was some years back. I followed some minor celebs, authors, musicians, news providers and some key players in my career. It was good to keep track of news and developments in subjects I was interested in. I dabbled but didn’t engage.
About two years ago I returned and started engaging. I followed some real life friends and a couple of local tweeps who had featured in the media, and from there slowly dived into conversations. It felt weird, chatting online to people I didn’t know...but the thing is, I felt like I knew them and in time I suspect they felt like they knew me. And most of all, they were kind and generous with their time and friendship.
Suddenly I had two groups of people I conversed with, one being the Newy Tweeps, the other includes music-loving tweeps, but in time the two intertwined...Newcastle is a small place!
The music group came from me live tweeting RocKwiz on a Saturday night if I was home. Slowly people responded to my comments. It enhanced the television experience as we all bonded over what music we liked...or not.
It didn’t take long to realise we were of a similar age with the same interests, and surprisingly all lived in the area! We all really love our music and met up in real life, at a concert last year and lasting friendships were made.
The same goes for the Newcastle Tweeps, mostly women (and some men) around the same age and again with very similar interests. We meet, have lunch, go to movies and do all the things you would with regular friends...we ARE regular friends!
But I feel it is an enhanced friendship, we all chat almost every day, about all sorts of things, support each other, and send virtual love if the going is tough or just because. Someone is always out there on Twitter.
These gorgeous people are like-minded souls, they understand me, appreciate me for me and I just love them for that.
We all want to find people to connect with and share our experiences with.
Twitter is a great platform for this, it is not a replacement for real life, but an interesting part of real life.
A lot of these people have commented to me they consider me in their close circle of friends, some before I even met them, I know I feel exactly the same.
That is why the Newy Twistmas party was so successful, we all wanted to meet those people we chat to online and see if they are as lovely as they appear. And you know what, they were! If you could have bottled the love and joy that night, you’d be onto something special. I look forward to our next one, in the meantime, come on over and say hello!
