New research is about to get underway to investigate the effects of mixing alcohol with energy drinks.

The scientific study has been commissioned by the NSW Government and carried out by researchers at various universities led by the Victorian-based Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre.

Health Minister Gillian Skinner says there is anecdotal evidence suggesting that caffeine in energy drinks has the effect of masking people's perceptions of how intoxicated they are.

"So they drink even more without knowing that they're already drunk and that then leads to aggression and other risky and sometimes dangerous behaviour," she said.

"There's anecdotal evidence so far but we need the medical evidence about the adverse impacts and we also need to know what's happening, why they do this, what people think and also testing what the psychological impacts might be as well as the physical impacts of mixing these drinks."

She says the study will involve surveying people aged between 16 and 35 while they are out on the town in areas in inner Sydney but also in regional centres such as Orange and Newcastle.
