Violent NSW parole breaker could be WA bound - ABC Online

Updated December 11, 2012 08:06:40

Police are hunting for a convicted armed robber who has broken his parole conditions in New South Wales and may be heading to Western Australia to attempt to target police officers.

Jason Herbert was released less than a fortnight ago after serving part of a 15-year jail sentence for unlawfully causing grievous bodily harm and armed robbery.

Police say Herbert is dangerous and should not be approached.

His parole came with strict supervision conditions, but he escaped from a halfway house near Newcastle on Saturday.

Herbert was wearing an electronic monitoring device and is understood to have simply cut it off.

The 40-year-old was last seen near the Pacific Highway at Hexham on Saturday afternoon.

It is the second time Herbert has fled NSW this year.

Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin has ordered an urgent inquiry into the incident.

Herbert's disappearance follows recent revelations from the NSW Government of malfunctions in around half of the tracking devices used by the department this year.

It is understood Herbert has made threats against two specific Western Australian police officers.

In 2009, the officers were reportedly involved in a police chase of Herbert's brother, Troy Herbert.

Troy Herbert died when he crashed his motorbike after police aborted the chase.

Western Australian police say they are aware of the situation and have taken all necessary actions to ensure the safety and security of the officers.
