Airport pushing for international flights - ABC Online

Newcastle Airport management says it will be disappointed if the facility does not offer international flights within two years.

The strong Australian dollar has made it cheaper to travel overseas, leading to a significant downturn in the domestic tourism market.

Newcastle's manager of aviation business development David Nye says airports with international services were the only ones to see growth in the leisure market over the last few years.

He says it is crucial Newcastle diversifies.

"It means we have to have a little bit of infrastructure in terms of a bit of additional building," he said.

"We need to do some more work with Canberra in terms of the border requirements for customs and immigration, but those discussions are ongoing.

"We have airlines that are interested, particularly with flights to New Zealand.

"It's difficult to say when, because we need a few things to line up.

"But, certainly within two years, I'd be disappointed if we didn't have international services at Newcastle Airport."
