NSW firefighters await cool weather

New South Wales firefighters are hoping a cool change will bring some relief as crews continue to fight 94 fires across the state.

A cool change has swept across Sydney earlier than expected with temperatures dropping and the possibility of afternoon showers.

Sydney was set to sizzle today with predicted highs of 39 degrees Celsius in the city and 45 degrees Celsius in the west, but the Bureau of Meteorology says persistent cloud cover has kept temperatures down.

Forecaster Julie Evans says Sydney Airport recorded a maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius before dropping to 25 degrees Celsius by midday, while western Sydney hovered around the 29-30 degrees Celsius mark.

High temperatures reaching over 40 degrees Celsius were expected to hit Newcastle and the Hunter region before midday.

Elsewhere inland, temperatures were continuing to soar, with Bourke and Tibooburra still expected to be the hottest parts of the state at 47 degrees Celsius.
