THE sharp fall in the number of students applying for university places in Britain following the rise in tuition fees appears to have tailed off, with some institutions reporting increases of almost 25 per cent.

A Sunday Times survey indicates that fears that tens of thousands of students would turn their backs on higher education are largely unfounded.
