An undermanned but relieved Melbourne Victory looks set to rush new signing Daniel Mullen in for Saturday's home match against Western Sydney.
But Victory and Melbourne Heart have ruled out signing Jason Culina, who left Sydney FC after a disagreement with coach Frank Farina.
Victory were sweating on the Mullen deal being concluded before last night's A-League transfer deadline and it was confirmed about 4pm, just as the defender was boarding a flight from China.
Mullen, 23, a former Adelaide United player, is on loan for the rest of the season from Chinese Super League club Dalian Aerbin, but Victory is likely to want to extend his contract.
Defensive reinforcement became a priority when Nick Ansell tore a groin muscle and was ruled out for 6-8 weeks.
Mullen, capped by the Socceroos, is likely to slot into centre back for the clash against the Wanderers, who jumped above Victory on Saturday.
"We have no doubt he'll be able to make an impact for us this season and potentially could remain with the club beyond finals," Victory coach Ange Postecoglou said.
"Daniel's arrival provides a bit more defensive depth and cover."
Mark Milligan returns after missing last week on Socceroos duty but Victory is under-manned for Saturday's clash - Archie Thompson (hamstring) will miss and Adama Traore is suspended.
