Newcastle filmmaker Stephen Roberts knew from the start that he wanted his ABC Open stories to be about the kinds of sports that fall outside of the mainstream.
"I'd seen a lot of the videos on the Open site had been normal sports, like cricket and soccer and football, so I wanted to do something really different," Stephen said.
It doesn't hurt that the subject of the story Cassie Hart is a terrific talent who is able to tell the story concisely and with great passion, says Stephen.
"She was just really into it," says Stephen.
"She also had a lot of theatre experience as well, so it made interviewing her and getting her point across, really easy.
"I think if we'd done it with anyone else, it would have been a bit harder to tell that story in that amount of time, and it wouldn't have come across as flowing and as nicely."
Stephen, who is studying this year for a diploma in screen studies at Hunter TAFE, says ABC Open has given him plenty of good projects to focus on.
Last year he took on the 110% Sport project as part of the coursework, writing, producing an editing a story to a brief, with the added bonus of getting published on the ABC.
Some other Hunter TAFE students have had their work selected for inclusion in the Open TV program at 6.45pm, on Friday night on ABC News 24, and on iView.
"The first one we did, the pole dancing one, was originally a TAFE assignment they wanted to do to get us out shooting projects," Stephen says.
Stephen's first contribution to 110% Sport was another left-of-field story about a pole dancing instructor Leanne Towse.
"The whole idea behind the pole dancing story was to try and take something a bit left field, and show that it is a sport as well," Stephen said.
For that story he wanted to dispel some of the stereotypes about pole dancing, and to portray 'the human physical exertion and skill' that constitute a sport.
"She owns her own business, and she teaches young girls how to dance and how to be fit out of that, and I thought it was a great story to tell," Stephen said.
The 110% Sport project has now closed but you can still enjoy the contributions at the ABC Open website.
