Fire crews battling large caravan business blaze - ABC Online

Firefighters have managed to extinguish a large fire which swept through a caravan business on the Pacific Highway at Hexham, just north of Newcastle.

New South Wales Fire and Rescue says the blaze broke out just after 4:30am (AEDT) this morning.

Supervisor Glenn Stewart says the workshop and a number of caravans were burnt, but fire crews managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring businesses.

Owner, Damian Charleson says he is still waiting to get inside to assess the full extent of the damage, but it appears to be confined to the sales and spare parts workshop of the site.

He says around half a dozen caravans were damaged.

The fire comes after a massive caravan show was held at the Newcastle Showground on the weekend and Mr Charleson says he is hoping to re-open again as soon as possible.

"We've got another site up at Heatherbrae so that'll help us get up and running quickly," he said.

"But our computer systems and phone systems have been lost so we need to work out how we get those up and running and contact our customers."

Police are at the site as investigations get underway into what sparked the blaze.
