Newcastle Jets veteran Michael Bridges hopes his experience can help boost the team against the Melbourne Heart at Hunter Stadium tonight.
The home game will see Bridges in the starting side for the first time this season, where he'll partner fellow Englishman Emile Heskey.
The Jets are desperate for a win to help keep their finals hopes alive after dropping out of the top six last round.
Bridges says he thought his chances of ever making the starting side were done.
"You never want to admit that, but at the back of the mind it does play and think oh there's 15 minutes here and and 30 minutes there, will I ever get the opportunity?" he said.
"It depends on your mentality if you want to let that beat you, beat you up at the end of the day then you're going to get yourself down and you're not going to impress.
"So it has been hard and a tough and a hard pill to swallow because I did feel like I can offer something to this football club on the park and the opportunity has come around through hard work."
Jets defender Taylor Regan says the team must take the three points at home to stay on track for a finals berth.
"Obviously it's not do or die just yet but they're a team that's ahead of us, but at the same time they're in our race," he said.
"They're looking for the last two spots in the semis and we must take maximum points against these teams.
"If we let them beat us it sort of opens up a little gap and that's not what we want.
"We're going out there to attack as you can see with the line-up that we're fielding and we can expect nothing less than three points."
