Webster helps Castleford shock champs Leeds - Sydney Morning Herald

ENGLISH SUPER LEAGUE WRAP

LONDON: Castleford centre Jake Webster played a key role as the Tigers sent defending Super League champions Leeds crashing to their first defeat of the season on Sunday.

Webster, who enjoyed spells in the NRL with the Melbourne Storm and the Gold Coast Titans before moving to Europe in 2008, touched down 13 minutes after Jordan Tansey's opener.

Ryan Hall had put Rhinos in front eight minutes after the restart with Kevin Sinfield converting both to make it 12-10.

However, Castleford were not to be denied and two goals from Jamie Ellis in the last six minutes of the match ensured Webster's first-half effort wasn't in vain as the Tigers ran out 14-12 winners.

Meanwhile, Shane Rodney scored the only try for the London Broncos as they slumped to a second straight defeat 34-6 by Huddersfield, who have now won two from two.

Rodney grabbed his score in the 23rd minute, it converted by Shane Grady, but it affected the Giants little as they ran in six tries.

Shaun Lunt grabbed two of them and Eorl Crabtree, Brett Ferres, Joe Wardle and Craig Kopczak the others, with Danny Brough kicking five goals in the 34-6 victory.

Elsewhere, Francis Meli was also at the double as St Helens beat Widnes 16-4 in a feisty derby which saw Vikings forward Ben Cross, once of Canberra, Melbourne and Newcastle, sent off.

Meli levelled the scores for the Saints after Stefan Marsh opened Widnes' account before carnage ensued after a high tackle on St Helens captain Paul Wellens.

Cross was sent off for his role in the melee, while team-mate Jon Clarke was sin-binned with Meli making the most of the advantage to score again along with Lee Gaskell.

And in the other game on Sunday, Hull recorded their first win 28-12 against Bradford with Shannon McDonnell, who has moved from city rivals KR, among the scorers.

The 25-year-old grabbed Hull's second score after Jason Crookes' opener with Tom Briscoe, Daniel Holdsworth, who also kicked four goals, and Jay Pitts all going over after the break.

On Saturday, Catalan Dragons made it two from two with a 40-6 victory over Salford, the Dragons playing the majority of the game with 12 men and running in seven tries including one from Steve Menzies.

Vincent Duport grabbed two of the seven, with Menzies, Remi Casty, Ian Henderson, Olivier Elima and Daryl Millard also scoring on home soil.

Catalan could even afford to play 77 minutes with 12 men after prop Julian Bousquet was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Theo Fages.

In the other game on the day, Ben Cockayne grabbed a late hat-trick as Wakefield got up and running with a 36-20 win over Hull KR, while on Friday Wigan drew 17-17 with Warrington.

Joel Monaghan bagged a double for Warrington who scored three tries and two goals much like Wigan with Matty Smith and Lee Briers exchanging late drop goals for the draw.
