A woman has been killed and six people, including five children, have been injured in a head-on crash in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.
Early yesterday evening, a sedan and hatchback collided at Lovedale, which is about 27 kilometres west of Maitland.
Police say a 41-year-old woman who was driving the hatchback suffered critical injuries and died on the way to hospital.
A 25-year-old woman from Raymond Terrace was driving the sedan and suffered serious leg injuries.
Five children were also travelling in the cars.
Three girls in the hatchback, aged 13, 9 and 7 were taken to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl in the sedan suffered minor injuries and were also taken to hospital.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
