The Newcastle Jets have re-signed in-demand midfielder Ruben Zadkovich to a two-year deal.

Zadkovich, who joined the A-League club in 2010, will also be handed the long-term captaincy following the shock departure of former skipper Jobe Wheelhouse last week.

Wheelhouse stunned teammates on Thursday by quitting immediately after being told it was unlikely he would be offered a new contract by the Jets at the end of the season.

Zadkovich has been one of the competition's form players this season and has knocked back a number of offers from rival clubs to stick with the Jets.

"Ruben's enthusiasm and dedication to the team and our supporters is an asset to the club," chief executive Robbie Middleby said.

"We feel fortunate to secure Ruben as there was significant interest from other clubs."

The 26-year former Sydney FC player said the Jets were the perfect fit for him.

"I am stoked to re-sign for another two years," Zadkovich said.

"The Jets are the whole package for me; I love this town, the fans and the club.

"We are a young team and taking on a leadership role is something I have really enjoyed and want to continue.

"I want to lead by example and for the Jets to have a strong finish to the season."

Coach Gary van Egmond said Zadkovich is a cornerstone of the Jets playing group.

"Ruben has not only matured into a leader on and off the field but his form this season has been outstanding," van Egmond said.

"He has stepped up this season as a player and is a great mentor to the young players."
