New cab company close to reality - ABC Online

After almost five years in the making, Newcastle's newest cab company is close to becoming a reality.

A group of taxi drivers moved to set up a rival network, known as Nova Taxis, in 2008 after Cabcharge introduced a controversial booking system.

It took about three years to get a license and Nova director, Stephen Hobbins, says they are now in talks to secure high-tech systems.

He says getting the latest technology on board will be one of the last hurdles.

"We've been in talks with technology companies all along, we have looked at a few different systems," he said.

"One system actually was great except the administration didn't come to fruition, the other systems we've looked at are good, we're just looking at system now and doing the final touches to it with a view to bring it on it on board."

Mr Hobbins, says he is not sure when the date for the company's official opening will be, but they're in the final stages of planning.

"It's very exciting," he said.

"I'm sure that it'll not only be exciting for me, it'll be exciting for the travelling public and the taxi operators and drivers of Newcastle."
