PAUL Gascoigne has been given the best reason yet to stay off the drink – the chance of a job in football.

Bosses at his beloved Newcastle United plan to offer their former player a coaching role if he can stay on the wagon.

Gazza’s family and friends believe it will be the best motivation for the fallen former England ace to stay sober.

A club insider said: “He will always be a legend at this club. If he can stay on the wagon for around six months, the powers that be want to find him a job here.

“Everyone knows it’s the one thing which may keep him on the straight and narrow.”

Former Rangers star Gazza, 45, enjoyed a visit to the Toon’s youth academy a few weeks ago to watch his nephew

Cameron, 11, train.

If Gazza – who returned last month from rehab at a £6000-a-week clinic in the US paid for by pals – can beat his problems, the club intend to get him coaching youngsters on Saturday mornings.

A club source said: “Just having him around the place would be massively inspirational for the youth teams. Obviously that could only happen if he was totally sober.

“Even if the only responsibility he had was to put out cones and hand out bibs, it would be a footballing role he could focus on.”

Gazza, who also played for Spurs and Lazio, has been spending more time on Tyneside, where his dad John, mum Carole and sister Lyndsay live.

He is also mending fences with his son Regan, 17, and step-daughter Bianca, 26. Last week he met them and ex-wife Sheryl, 47, for lunch.

This week, he told STV’s This Morning he had overheard medical staff at the clinic in Arizona say: “I don’t think this guy’s going to make it.”

He had earlier admitted to lifelong friend Jimmy “Five Bellies” Gardner he had “never been so close to dying”.
