A Newcastle community sporting organisation says it is disappointed a significant chunk of the latest round of the Regional Development Australia Fund has been allocated to western Sydney.
The Prime Minister Julia Gillard has spent a week in Sydney's western suburbs, sparking accusations the government is pork-barrelling in a bid to 'purchase' marginal seats.
Cooks Hill United Football Club and Newcastle Athletics are lobbying for $3 million to upgrade the city's National Park Number four and five sportsgrounds.
Both organisations say the facilities are "dilapidated and under strain".
Football club spokesman Ed Crawford says the money would also be spent on the athletics facility, which is the training track for wheelchair athletes, including paralympian Kurt Fearnley.
"Disappointing for groups in regional areas that really rely on this sort of funding for infrastructure and community facilities upgrades," he said.
"It's a shame that it's been politicised and we're hoping that there will be a bit of a review of how this has been administrated.
"The evidence before us is fairly damning - it appears that no groups outside of western Sydney have been invited to participate in this most recent review of the program."
