After helping some of the worlds biggest cities become more liveable, Danish architect and Professor of Urban Design Jan Gehl has now turned his attention to Newcastle.
"There's a tailwind blowing for a completely new way of looking at cities where they are looking to be liveable and sustainable," said Gehl.
"One city after another are realising that it is not business as usual, and maybe the purpose of a city is not shopping or making cars happy."
Gehl believes the way a city is planned can have a significant impact on the health of a community.
He says design that encourages frequent walking and bicycling "could save us building two hospitals later".
Gehl has worked on cities including Melbourne, New York and Copenhagen, where 37% of residents cycle to work each day.
The architect will present his vision this evening at a sold out Newcastle Now forum.
