Rob Elliot says that first-team recognition with Newcastle United will mean nothing – if the Magpies blow their big chance to earn Premier League survival
West Bromwich Albion's Shane Long has a shot saved by Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot
Rob Elliot says that first-team recognition with Newcastle United will mean nothing – if the Magpies blow their big chance to earn Premier League survival.
The Magpies can take a huge stride towards safety by beating Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Sunday, with a victory meaning the pressure will be piled on FA Cup finalists Wigan.
Elliot has been handed an unexpected chance in the final weeks of the season due to a dislocated shoulder for Dutch international Tim Krul.
But rather than focus on personal gains, he told the Chronicle: “I just want to make sure Newcastle are playing in the Premier League next year.
“That’s all I can do. It’s nice to play games, but I won’t turn around with pride if we get relegated.
“Hopefully, we can stay in the Premier League, and that’ll be us on our way.”
Elliot will be making his 10th top-flight appearance for the Magpies at QPR.
But Krul will be back at the end of July as the battle to be No 1 commences again in earnest.
However, Elliot said: “On a personal note, it’s great. I’m not even thinking about that.”
And he is just keen to pick up the win needed to lift Newcastle fans after what has been a long, hard season.
He said: “It will be a similar game to West Ham – another London game against a good team.
“But we have plenty to build on after last weekend.”
