Melbourne Cup Day on 1233 - ABC Local

You can listen in from 2.30pm for all the atmosphere and excitement of our live broadcast from Flemington, with our Grandstand experts Gerard Whately, Drew Morphett and David Morrow.

And in the lead-up from 1pm, Carol Duncan's Afternoons will be coming to you live from outside Newcastle Art Gallery, celebrating its exhibition of the Darnell Collection of exquisite vintage clothing from the world's most famous designers.

Carol's Fashions on the Green will be an elegant event held under a marquee on the Laman St Green, where 1233 listeners who won tickets will enjoy finger food, champagne, wine or beer while watching the Melbourne Cup on a big screen.

Fashionistas are encouraged to dress up to be in the running for prizes in the "Best Hat" and "Best Outfit" parades.

With over $6million in prize money, the Melbourne Cup is the world's richest turf race in 2013, and attracts quality stayers from around the globe.

In recent years there's been criticism of the lack of Australian contenders, with only two locally-bred horses running in last year's Cup.

The French-trained Dunaden, which won in 2011, is expected to make a strong showing again this year after its storming win in the Caulfield Cup on October 20.

"Cups King" Bart Cummings, whose horses have won the Melbourne Cup 12 times, is hoping his veteran stayer Precedence, who finished seventh last year, will be in the running this time.

As for the likely fashion looks at Flemington this year, you can expect to see a lot of prints, especially florals, and also tribal designs.

Mad Men-style early 60s elegance is very on trend, with dresses fitted at the waist with big skirts expected to be a popular look.

Bold, bright colours will again be a feature of Cup Day fashion, with shades of blue and orange especially prevalent.

And the romantic look with soft, pastel shades and lacy, sheer fabrics will also be a popular choice.

If you want to be a bit more edgy, the two-piece matching trouser suit in bold prints is likely to make an appearance.

As for the all-important headwear, we're likely to see some straw "boater" and Panama-style hats, with the Mad Men look bringing pillbox hats with netting back into the mix.

Strappy heels and open-toe platforms will still be the most popular shoe choices, with nude tones and mock snakeskin dominating. For more comfort, especially if you'll be attending an actual race meeting, wedges are a good compromise.

As for men's fashion, a well-fitted suit is most important, and will last you for many years if you accessorise well with cufflinks, belt, tie, sunglasses and even perhaps a snappy fedora or trilby hat.

And you'll stand out if you make some bold choices with the colour and pattern of your shirt and tie.

So top up your champagne, don your best hat and join 1233 for an afternoon of fun and celebration from 1pm on Tuesday, November 5.
