Playing for the love of the game - ABC Online


But that's what's been happening at Special Olympics events all around Newcastle, as teams from Australia meet their counterparts from Asian and Pacific nations.


Today at Number 2 Sportsground the Philippines defeated Australia 1-0 in soccer, but the result didn't seem to matter as much as the fun both teams were having, as 1233's Nick Gerber found when he stopped by. (listen to attached audio)


Jack McNealy is coach of the Australian soccer team for the Asia Pacific Special Olympics, and says the players just really enjoy themselves.


"It's my opinion that mainstream sport have lost a little bit, and these guys have still got it, it's the love of the game," he says.


"And just the effort they put in, the amount of time, it's just as much as what the mainstream guys put into their sport."
