Amanda Palmer can best be described as the charismatic pioneer of punk cabaret, a style first defined by her group The Dresden Dolls. Now a hugely influential solo artist, Palmer returns to Australia for a ten night run at the Sydney Festival from the 9th to the 19th of January. Since leaving the Dresden Dolls, she has carved a career for herself as an accessible artist, communicating with her league of fans via social media, resulting in real life connections in return, even raising over 1 million dollars on 'Kickstarter' to record her last album with the Grand Theft Orchestra.
1233's Grant Wolter spoke with Amanda Palmer about her varied career, from street performer to major label band member; from independent solo artist to social media champion.
Hear about winning over new crowds at the Spiegeltent, working with her husband (renowned author Neil Gaiman) and what it's like opening up to millions on stage and on-line.
This interview contains adult themes and mild course language.
