A man has died in hospital after he crashed his motorcycle during a police chase in the New South Wales Hunter region last week.
The motorcyclist was stopped for a random breath test at Fern Bay, north of Newcastle, on Boxing Day.
But police say the 40-year-old sped off when officers discovered he did not have a motorcycle licence.
Police began pursuing the man, chasing him for about 15 kilometres until he veered off the road and crashed into a pole at Heatherbrae.
The man was flown to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in a critical condition.
At around midnight last night, his life support was switched off.
Police are conducting an internal investigation into the accident.
The man's death brings the national holiday road toll to 44.
New South Wales has had the most deaths since December 23rd, with 12 motorists dying on the state's roads.
Nine people have died on Victoria's roads, eight in Western Australia, six in South Australia, five in Queensland, three in Tasmania and one in the Northern Territory.
