NEWCASTLE boss Alan Pardew admits it was always going to be difficult for his side to repeat last season’s heroics.
And he compared the Magpies’ dip to that suffered by today’s opponents City, who have failed to maintain the consistency which saw them crowned Premier League champions last May.
Pardew, who defied the odds to lead Newcastle into the Europa League with a fifth-placed finish last term, said: “When you’ve won the championship, as they did with the last kick of the season, it is difficult to back it up the next year.
“I do hope the manager stays because he will be better for it as well. That experience can help him next season.
“I remember Chelsea winning it one season and not doing so well the next. So it does happen and you have to gain the experience that Manchester United have.
“It is difficult for the players to do it again — especially with a small squad as we had — and City have a much bigger squad.
“But I still don’t think this is a disappointing season for them.
“They can still have a great season in the Premier League by finishing second to one of the best United teams Alex Ferguson has had for a number of years.
“But it’s not over yet so don’t be fooled. If they win the rest of their games, it could be a fabulous season.”
