A man charged over the indecent assault of a three-year-old girl at a Newcastle West shopping centre chose to stay in the police cells when his case was mentioned in court today.

41-year-old Timothy Burchell was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated indecent assault.

Police allege he assaulted the young girl at a shopping centre in King Street on March 17 when her parents momentarily lost sight of her.

In Newcastle Local Court this morning Burchell's solicitor said no pleas were being entered and there was no application for bail.

The matter was adjourned until Wednesday.

Team Leader at the Newcastle Child Abuse Squad Detective Sergeant Rob Watson says the man's arrest was a collaborative effort by officers.

"A complex investigation was commenced immediately upon the child's disclosure," he said.

"Investigators from the Child Abuse Squad, Sex Crime Squad and Newcastle Local Area Command collaborated with the shopping centre in question where an offender was identified and subsequently charged and arrested yesterday at the Waratah Police Station."
