Former Newcastle Knights star Danny Wicks has walked from jail after completing his sentence for supplying drugs.
Wicks attended his final roll call at 8am on a drizzly Good Friday before being released half an hour later from the Glen Innes Correctional Centre. The 27-year-old had served 18 months of his three-year jail sentence.
Wicks, who spent some of his time behind bars with younger brother Brett, showed little emotion as he left the prison.
His release was swift, transferring from the back of a corrective service officer's car into the front of a waiting black Toyota HiLux.
''I picked him up this morning. He's glad to be back with his family,'' his father, Gary, told Fairfax Media. ''I'm just glad he's home.''
Wicks told News Limited: "I'm fitter now than I've ever been because I trained hard every day while inside. It kept me focused and helped me get through the days.
"But I'm certainly not about to put up my hand and say I want to play again. There are so many more important things awaiting me like catching up with my family and friends, getting a job and kick-starting my life.''
The haste at which the HiLux left the facility may have been an indication of Wicks's keenness to put prison behind him. He was casually dressed in board shorts and a T-shirt, before heading to Yamba, where his family has a property.
A surprisingly fast front-rower, the Grafton Ghosts junior was contracted for $240,000 a season with the Knights after he had kicked off his NRL career with St George Illawarra in 2006. He wore Newcastle's colours in 40 games in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, but it is difficult to imagine him adding to that tally.
