The Newcastle Lord Mayor’s mansion has been targeted in a “high value” burglary.

Thieves broke into Mansion House on Fernwood Road in Jesmond overnight on Monday where they made off with is believed to be a substantial amount of goods.

Included in the items stolen was some valuable silverware but officers are continuing to work with council staff to establish exactly how much has been taken.

There were extra officers in the area yesterday carrying out inquiries, speaking to nearby residents and businesses and appealing for witnesses.

A Newcastle City Council spokesperson urged anyone with information to contact police.

He added: "The repairs to the building have now been carried out and it is business as usual at the Mansion House. All the functions scheduled to take place this week will go ahead as planned."

Anyone with any information into the burglary is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191.
