Newcastle to host Australian Doctors Orchestra - Newcastle Herald

April 22, 2013, 4:49 p.m.

THE Hunter’s medicos will swap needles for notes this weekend.

Newcastle is to host the 20th annual Australian Doctors Orchestra performance at Newcastle Conservatorium Hall.

It is the first time the national group has staged a concert in Newcastle.

The 72-piece ensemble will include 12 Hunter health professionals on instruments that include cello, trombone, viola, oboe and trumpet.

Anaesthetist Judy Chen is among the Hunter-based performers.

She said there was a full symphony including violin, double bass, piccolo, French horns, trumpet, cello and clarinet.

The program includes Hunter-based pianist Ian Munro performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto, Beethoven’s fifth Symphony and Australian music educator Darcy Holland’s Summer’s End.

‘‘We are excited - Newcastle has never held a concert before,’’ Dr Chen said.

‘‘It’s been about six months in the process of organising it.’’

Dr Chen said anecdotally it appeared many doctors played instruments.

‘‘It requires dedication to learn an instrument, perhaps that is why,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s a wonderful hobby because it’s so different from our day to day work, it’s relaxing and very creative.’’

The concert is 2pm on Sunday.

Tickets are $50 and money raised goes to Hunter Children’s Research Foundation.
