CRONULLA and NSW captain Paul Gallen has sent a scare through the Blues ranks with State of Origin only a month away after leaving the field with a knee injury in the opening minutes of the Sharks' game against Newcastle at Hunter Stadium.
Gallen limped off the field in only the second minute after hearing a click in his right knee. He was immediately taken up the tunnel, in the process casting a giant shadow over his immediate playing future.
Gallen would have been the first name picked when Blues coach Laurie Daley sits down to select his side for Origin I in three weeks. He may still be, although Daley faces an anxious time as he awaits the outcome of Gallen's injury complaint.
His potential absence would not only strip NSW of its best player, but force Daley to find a new captain. Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah is his likely replacement as skipper, although former captain Kurt Gidley could also come under consideration.
Queensland has won the past seven Origin series.
