Finalists revealed in 1233's Portrait Prize - ABC Online

There are pictures of husbands, sons, daughters, an elderly father, even a Burmese cat!

Among the group are some intriguing self-portraits, and there's a mix of colour and black-and-white photography.

You can see the explanations behind each photo in the extended captions in the gallery above.

The judges are Janelle Low, winner of the 2013 National Portrait Prize, Allan Chawner, a photographer and conjoint associate professor of fine art at the University of Newcastle, and Debbie Abraham, director of Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery.

Our finalists will now attend a workshop this weekend with Allan Chawner after which they will submit new works, before the ultimate winner is chosen.

The finalists' photographs will be publicly displayed at the Lake Macquarie gallery, and the ultimate winner will be announced by Paul Bevan at a live broadcast from the gallery on Thursday, June 27.

They will receive a trip to Canberra and an exclusive tour of the National Portrait Gallery.

A Listeners' Choice winner will also be selected from the gallery on the 1233 Facebook page, based on the photograph with the most "likes". It will be displayed alongside the 10 finalists.

So if you can't spot your personal favourite among our 10 finalists, go to the gallery and "like" the portrait you think is the best.
