A man has been charged after a handgun was recovered during raids in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police carried out 15 warrants at addresses across Newcastle in a targeted operation - codenamed Magnet - on Wednesday, May 15.

A handgun, along with ammunition and approximately £50,000 cash was seized from The Shopping Centre at Chapel House.

Robert Douglas Rowntree, 34, of The Shopping Centre, has been charged with possessing a prohibited weapon, possessing cannabis, possessing ammunition for a firearm without a certificate and possessing criminal property.

He was due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court this morning.

The other 13 people arrested as part of the early morning raids - 11 men aged 46, 42, 38, 37, 34, 33, 32, 31, 26, 24 and 22 arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply controlled drugs, and two women aged 46 and 31 arrested on suspicion of attempting to conceal criminal property - have been bailed pending further enquiries.

The activity on Wednesday was the culmination of a long-running operation into drug dealing by an organised crime group in the city. Other small amounts of drugs and cash have been recovered during the operation yesterday morning.

Raids also took place at Trevelyan Drive at Newbiggin Hall, Fairspring, Dunstan Walk, Darden Lough and Downham at West Denton, Farnham Close in Lemington, Hewley Crescent at Throckley, Colwyne Place, Saint Just Place and Yatesbury Avenue in Blakelaw, Hartburn Drive at Westerhope, Dunns Way in Blaydon, Gateshead, Tudor Walk at Kingston Park, and Hanover Mill in the city centre.

In the run up to the operation 12 arrests were made, so Wednesday's activity brings the total number of arrests to 26.

Information about drugs supply and organised crime can be reported to Northumbria Police on 101 or to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
