Queens Park Rangers 1 Newcastle United 2: match report - Telegraph.co.uk

Newcastle looked stunned, but they came back from the early setback well, Yohan Cabaye denied a goal by a superb block from Jose Bosingwa at the end of the flowing attacking move down the right flank.

QPR, though, did not fully clear the danger and when Hatem Ben Arfa ran into the area, Bosingwa went from hero to boo boy when he tugged the Frenchman back by his shirt in the area. It was a stupid penalty to give away and Ben Arfa lashed it into the top corner.

That calmed Newcastle nerves, but they had goalkeeper Rob Elliot to thank for keeping the scores level when he palmed away a snap shot from Hoilett before they took the lead in fortuitous fashion.

Jonás Gutiérrez chased down an under-hit back pass from Bosingwa, which Rob Green could only fire against him. The ball spun kindly for Yoan Gouffran, who rolled it into empty net with a deft side-footed volley from 20 yards.

QPR offered nothing after that, their abysmal season plunging to a new low as those in blue and white hoops masqueraded as a football team

Bosingwa and Stephane Mbiwa were deservedly hauled off at the break by a presumably incensed Harry Redknapp and his side responded.

Zamora was denied by an excellent tackle from Mike Williamson before Hoilett got a shot away from the edge of the area that beat Elliot but drifted narrowly wide.

Newcastle came close to making the three points safe when both Clint Hill and Jermaine Jenas almost bundled a corner into their own nets, but Shaun Derry hooked the ball off the line.

The Magpies seemed to be comfortable, but they were under the cosh in the closing stages when goalkeeper Rob Elliot was sent off. Shown a yellow card for dissent in the first-half, he stupidly handled outside of his area and was dismissed.

That set up a nervous final ten minutes for Pardew’s men, Zamora firing over from six yards on the turn, Townsend going close with a long-range strike, but Newcastle clung on for the victory and their place in the Premier League.
