Newcastle United have been linked with a shock move for wantaway Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

A story on the SportsDirect News website, which is affiliated to Newcastle owner Mike Ashley's company, claims the Magpies are ready to launch a big-money bid for the 27-year-old England striker.

They quote a source "close to the negotiations" who claims: “Newcastle see Wayne as their ideal player.

“He’s a strong centre-forward, would relate to the fans and would be a massive boost to the club’s brand name."

Despite this, the source admits: “Low-level conversations have already been held between Newcastle and Rooney’s agent, though the two clubs haven’t spoken directly yet.”

After his final home match at Old Trafford on Sunday, retiring Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Rooney had asked for a transfer, but insisted the club was determined to keep him.

Bayern Munich and Arsenal have also been linked with Rooney, though it is thought he is set to have talks with new United boss David Moyes before he decides on his future.

It's not the first time Newcastle have tried to buy Rooney - they made a bid for him in 2004 when he was at Everton, but the then 18-year-old chose Manchester United instead.

News of the story was greeted with scepticism by many fans, with some seeing it as a way for the club to boost season ticket sales, which will be available to buy soon.

But Newcastle today said the Rooney rumours are "nonsense."

In past years the club have sent legal letters to media organisations who have run incorrect transfer rumours.

A source said that the Sports Direct News website was not owned by Ashley's company but was a brand affiliation.
