Wild Wednesday in store for Newcastle - ABC Online

Going by the rather alarming predictions from the weather bureau at the weekend, most of us were expecting to be driving to work in absolutely foul conditions as the week began.

Instead, we were greeted with a cool, partly cloudy but by no means unpleasant day.

In fact the Hunter's severe weather warning had been removed by mid-morning.

The damaging winds and torrential rain we'd been warned about were instead hitting more southern parts of NSW, including the Illawarra and south coast.

Grant Conway, from the Bureau of Meteorology at Williamtown, says while the predicted east coast low did form off the coast, it didn't bring the amount of wind and rain that had been expected.

"The excessive winds, or damaging winds, and the heavy rain aren't expected now," Grant says.

However he says dangerous surf is still a concern and will probably cause some erosion along our beaches.

The low will move further east and to the south in the next 12 hours, Grant says, meaning the worst of the wind and rain will impact southern parts of the State.

However, he warns that on Wednesday the winds will turn to the south/south-east as the low moves away, bringing stronger winds to Newcastle and the Hunter, as well as possible heavy rain.

Grant predicts that Wednesday will bring the worst weather this week, with conditions easing considerably on Thursday as the next high-pressure system moves in.

Maximums of around 16 are expected on the coast tomorrow and Wednesday, rising to 18 on Thursday, with overnight temperatures of around six to 10 degrees.

There's the possibility of snowfalls above 1200m in the Upper Hunter on Tuesday.
