Muree in final four of NSW Masters - Newcastle Herald

July 22, 2013, 10:30 p.m.

AGE has not wearied Muree Golf Club, in fact it has enlivened it.

Muree are through to the final four of the NSW Masters Pennants after beating the No. 2 seed New Brighton 4 and 3 on Sunday at Muirfield.

On Sunday they will face Castle Hill at Twin Creeks for the right to play the winner of Carnarvon and Mona Vale in the final at Lynwood on August 4.

Muree qualified 10th after the divisional finals and were the only country club to reach the top eight.

One of their best during the campaign has been three-marker Frank Musgrave, who came out of retirement aged 77.

Muree has also been boosted by the masters age qualification of multiple club champion and No. 1 John Sullivan and Shane Mullarvey.

Peter Gardiner also only decided to play masters pennants for the first time and has gone through undefeated.

"This is the best masters team we've had for 10 years," captain Steve Davidson said.

■ Refinements to Luke Morrison's swing has brought instant results for the Waratah member as he won the Pacific Dunes vardon event on Saturday.

In his first ever trip to the Medowie course, Morrison carded an even-par 72 to beat Toukley's Dave Willett (77) and Maitland's Andrew Ald (77) by five strokes.

The victory broke a drought for the 18-year-old going back to the boys' NSW Amateur Match Play Championships last September.

While Morrison has not played many tournaments in recent months, he has been busy working on his game under Newcastle Golf Club professional Jason Laws.

"'I've just been working on the tempo of my swing, by slowing it down," he said.

"I'm also getting it more compact and just trying to get my hand more forward of the ball to give it more penetrative flight," he said.

"It definitely worked on Saturday as the key to Pacific Dunes is hitting the ball good.

"Off the tee I didn't miss a fairway."

■ The Newcastle District representative side suffered another blow on Sunday when they were defeated 5.5 to 4.5 by the Newcastle Golf Club in the traditional Peter Porter Cup.

John Twohill and Daniel Terry starred for the Fern Bay-based club winning the fourball 1 up and the foursomes 6 and 5 over Craig Avery and Justin Ely.

District won the foursomes 3-2, but lost the fourball 3.5 to 1.5 to give Newcastle Golf Club a rare win.

It was the District's second straight loss following their 11.5 to 5.5 defeat to Hunter River last month.

On Sunday Newcastle play Central Coast at Toronto.
