South Newcastle hockey girls in NSW side - Newcastle Star

July 8, 2013, 6:38 p.m.

SOUTH Newcastle Junior Girl's hockey club is celebrating after four of their unbeaten A-Grade team made the NSW under-15 side to compete in the national championships at Busselton, Western Australia in late September and early October.

Alex Curran, Yasmin Skene, Jasmine Etheridge and Emma Spinks were selected after the three-day high-performance camp in Newcastle last week.

Spinks is the only girl not playing Premier League in the Newcastle senior women's competition.

Tigers club's Katie Schimann was named in the NSW under-15 Blues team against Queensland second team at Coffs Harbour at the same time as the national championships.

In the boys under-15 division Tigers Reid Bourke and Wests Patrick McGann will play in the national titles at Darwin, also in the September/October school vacation.

Lachlan Rinkin is in the NSW Blues side and Rory Walker and Mitch Bisson are in the NSW under-14 development team.

Ky Willott of the Norths Club will represent NSW Primary Schools at the Schools Sports Australia Championships in August.

He is in the Newcastle team at the state under-13 titles in Taree this week.

In local women's Premier League, Tigers caused the upset of the season, beating competition heavyweights Central 1-nil in a match where Newcastle's representative captain, Prue Garvin stood out for the black and gold.

Central were disjointed, mainly due to the strong defensive attitude displayed by Tigers and the greens could find few attacking moves to counter.

Competition leaders Regals will be analysing their latest performances after three straight draws.

On Saturday they struggled to find the net against Oxfords, where Amy Stewart and Brittany Mortimer had outstanding games.

Souths and University drew nil-all in a match where both sides fielded depleted teams due to illness and university and school holidays.

In the men's Premier League Souths retained the top spot on the ladder when they beat the Maitland Rams 5-3 on the latter's home turf.

The win keeps them ahead of Norths on goal averages even though the Blues thrashed Tigers 15-nil.

The Entrance continues to sit right behind Souths and Norths as they beat University 3-1 while Wests could not match the fire power of Gosford in the 8-4 win.
