It includes the Hunter River centres of Raymond Terrace and parts of East Maitland, the retirement areas around Port Stephens and Foster, as well as the agricultural districts between Dungog and Stroud.


The issues of concern are as varied as the electorate itself with aged care, job security, immigration and small business relief being issues this election.


Paterson was a swinging marginal seat for a decade during the 90s with in being won twice by the Liberal and Labor parties.


Bob Baldwin won the seat for the Liberal party in 2001, he goes into this election with a 5.3% majority.
