Deadly Business: Closing The Gap In The Hunter - ABC Local

The nightly news might suggest this is only an issue in Central Australia or the Top End, but it's a reality in the suburbs and towns of the Hunter right now.

New South Wales is home to 30 per cent of Australia's indigenous population, the highest population of any state and territory. And around a quarter live in the Hunter New England Health (HNEH) district.

These members of our community are the unseen faces of Closing the Gap rhetoric, yet sadly major contributors to the statistics of those who are dying young in Australia today.

How is our health system responding?

In a special week-long investigation 1233 Mornings presenter Jill Emberson will reveal that innovative local health initiatives and major reform within HNEH are having significant wins in reversing key statistics.

Immunisation rates are soaring, birth weights are climbing, readmissions are dropping.

In Deadly Business you'll discover the significance of these measures and how HNEH reducing the rates of chronic illness.

From walking the wards of John Hunter Hospital to a trip with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, we discover why there is a health gap in our region and what's being done to close it.

Tune-in to Jill Emberson from Monday 26 May, and then every morning next week, to hear this special investigation. On your radio, online or on your ABC Newcastle Radio app.
