HE has been to Melbourne, Newcastle, Gosford, Brookvale, Belmore, Cronulla and now Canberra.

Former Test halfback Brett Kimmorley yesterday began a new era in his rugby league career as Canberra Raiders assistant coach.

"To be given the opportunity to become one of the assistant coaches is a great career move for me as I was considered more of a specialist coach at Canterbury," Kimmorley said.

"It was an offer that Dave (Furner) gave me and I think the club is in a wonderful position with the way they finished the season and the talent that is in the squad.

"My main role with the Bulldogs was working with the halves and looking after the catching/kicking side of things and I've felt like I've done a good apprenticeship.

"I played for a number of years and learnt a lot off Des Hasler in the last 12 months, so it's now a part of my development as a coach to work with (fellow assistant) Andrew Dunemann and help run the team, come up with structures and input our ideas to Dave."

Kimmorley will see the move as a stepping stone to becoming an NRL head coach. It appears he was unwanted at Belmore.

Asked about yesterday's first training session with Canberra, Kimmorley said: "Certainly attitude's a big part of it and what I saw out there at my first training session today was that the players are training very hard.

"They are accountable for their actions if they make an error and they're talking well, which is a good sign.

"All we can ask is that they put the hard work in now and prepare well. We can help with some structures, rules and guidelines, but it is up to how well the players buy into their own pride and some of the excitement they would have got from the end of last year."
