Council to plead for more gallery funding - ABC Online

Newcastle councillor Nuatali Nelmes says she would like a council delegation to meet with the Premier by the end of the month to ask for the remaining $7-million in funding for the Art Gallery redevelopment.

Council will next week consider a notice of motion calling for the project management of the redevelopment to be put out to tender, and for a project control group, made up of councillors, to be established to oversee the work.

Councillor Nelmes says $14 million in federal and council funding has been committed, and they desperately need the state government to make up the shortfall.

"We lead a delegation with the Lord Mayor to appeal to the Premier Barry O'Farrell for the seven million dollars in funding for the art gallery," she said.

"The promised $7 million from the State Government has not eventuated and that is really problematic at this stage."

"We can start the project but that commitment of funding hasn't come through."

Councillor Nelmes says a project control group oversaw work on the Newcastle Museum and the Number 2 Sportsground redevelopment, and could be used again for the Art Gallery.

"During some of the scoping work for the project there was well over a million dollars in project management costs and it was identified with councillors and staff that this was one way we could save money on the project."
