SOUTH Newcastle suffered a shock 18-10 loss to Terrigal in the opening round of the new Newcastle Rugby League pre-season competition today at Tomaree Sports Complex.
The match started terribly for the highly-fancied Lions when new English recruit Matt Bottom has concussed in a head clash in the opening tackle of the match.
The prop did not play any further part in the game.
Terrigal fielded a strong line-up, including ex-Wyong Roos backs Wes Tillot and Chad Sharp.
The other three Newcastle clubs fared much better in the early games.
Maitland overcame their problematic off-season to defeat Kincumber 30-12 at Peacock Field.
The Pickers have struggled to recruit troops over the summer, but young props Dalton Peel and Rob Mason gave rookie captain-coach PJ Ellis plenty of hope.
Billy Towers and Chad Solman made a sizeable halves pairing for Maitland, but Ellis expects new signing Shane Hasslemann to be cleared to play at halfback in the next pre-season match against Umina next Saturday.
Lakes United made an impressive start under former Knights NSW Cup coach Rip Taylor by defeating Northern Lakes 26-8 at Gumbuyah Oval.
‘‘I was pretty impressed with Jay Sullivan, whose one of our local kids, and he held his gloves up quite well,’’ Taylor said.
‘‘Joey Gibbs also went well in the forward pack. There’s a bit to build on.’’
Kurri Kurri also made a positive start to their season with a 28-12 win over Toukley at Morry Breen Oval.
