As a budding artist Les didn't know why he felt drawn to paint Aboriginal art and instead started painting portraits.
After discovering his Aboriginality while teaching inside Muswellbrook gaol, Les became Uncle Les, and in 2008 won the NAIDOC Artist of the Year award.
At 75 he's still learning and teaching art around the Hunter.
As a fresh water man, don't be surprised to see Uncle Les Elvin swimming or fishing in the cool waters of Wollombi or even the top end of the Karuah River at Allsworth, his childhood playground.
Hosted by Jill Emberson, Mornings presenter on 1233 ABC Newcastle, Meet the Mob is a weekly profile of Aboriginal people in the Hunter region of New South Wales.
