Two men charged after alleged assault upon police at soccer match - Newcastle - NSW Police Online (press release)

Two men have been charged after allegedly assaulting police at a soccer match in Newcastle yesterday.


About 9:40pm, Saturday 14 December 2013, police attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command, the Public Order and Riot Squad and Operational Support Group (OSG) were patrolling a soccer match at the Hunter Stadium when a fight broke out in the crowd.


Police will allege during the fight a number of objects were thrown. Numerous police responded to the incident when the crowd allegedly turned hostile towards them.


While an officer was attempting to arrest a man he was allegedly hindered by another spectator. The man who was hindering police was pushed out of the way by police and fell to the ground.


Police will allege the 21-year-old man grabbed an officer’s groin and refused to let go. The officer was forced to use defensive strikes in order remove and restrain the man.


He was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with assault police and granted conditional bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 16 January 2014.


In another incident at the match, police were speaking to three fans who were allegedly causing trouble when one of the men refused to abide by police directions to return to his seat.


Police will allege the man punched another spectator in the face three times before assaulting officers who tried to arrest him.


During the incident the man allegedly punched one of the officers on the side of the head before being wrestled to the ground and arrested.


The 41-year-old man was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was issued a court attendance notice for assault police and behave in an offensive manner. He will appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Monday 16 December 2013).


Investigations to locate and speak to the spectator who was assaulted are continuing.
